Exciting end to the State Championships

25-Sep-2011

Well what an entertaining week it has been with the running of the QJRU State Championships in Toowoomba. We were blessed with glorious weather which, when coupled with the marvelous playing fields and open space at Downlands, resulted in some entertaining rugby for the spectators and supporters.

Approximately 3,000 spectators were on hand each day and together with the 1,200 players, volunteers and officials provided crowds of between 4 -5,000 which ensured that the Championsips were well supported.

The Darling Downs under 13 team under coach Grant Gleeson was the best performed of the local teams coming third. The other teams played solidly and recorded some good wins along the way.

Darling Downs was very proud to have the following players selected in the Queensland Country representative teams:

Under 15 Country - Matthew Chong-nee, Damien Vagg and James McColl;

Under 16 Country - Tim Manns and Dom Watt

Under 17 Country - Ben Hyne, Lochlan Penberthy, Jack Cook and Matthew George

James McColl (Queensland under 15), Tim Manns (Queensland Under 16) and Lochlan Penberthy (Queensland under 17) have been selected in the respective Queensland teams to take on NSW and ACT later this week.
